The Bloodhound Club Kelperland Trophy Stake

Four hours cold over 2 miles

The best of the year's Senior working hounds are invited to compete for the Kelperland Trophy.  The Stake is open to all Working Trial Champion bloodhounds and the present holder of the Kelperland and Millvery Trophies.

Eligibility in each year is determined by the hounds winning the 1st or 2nd prize in the Senior Stake at Championship Trials for Bloodhounds held by the Bloodhound Club (BC) and the Association of Bloodhound Breeders (ABB).

2000

The Kelperland Trophy Stake 2000 was held on Sunday 28th January 2001 in Derbyshire.

1999

28-Nov-99:   Watlington, Oxfordshire

It was milder in the South, than last weekend in Scotland,
. . some rain in the night, no frost. Although clouds
remained overcast, we were spared any down-pours while
the five hounds competed in this four hour cold Stake.

However, the conditions were worsened by force 4 winds, and
despite tree-lined fields, the turbulance created,
confused most hounds and handlers.

As in the previous weekend, Robertson's Bora excelled, and
was awarded the Kelperland Trophy, by the Judge Sue Richards.
(no relation to David who was handling both Estelle and Myrtle)

1998

The Stake was again held near The Lee, Buckinghamshire.  This year the Stake was judged by the ABB Secretary, Leonarda Pogodzinski, on Saturday 5th December 1998.

The two mile / four hour cold lines all held scent (one rather too much).   It was a windless day, and the clear sky produced a hard frost that did not thaw until the afternoon.   The early linewalkers didn't need a torch since the fields of Buckinghamshire were floodlit by moonlight.

The early linewalkers didn't need a torch since the fields of Buckinghamshire were floodlit by moonlight.  Although no 2nd and 3rd places were awarded, apparently, three hounds could have won the trophy. (The judges report appeared in the BC Gazette p.55)

On this occasion, only one hound completing the line within fifty minutes, and the trophy was awarded to this:
Richards' Ch. Brighton's Myrtle of Chasedown.

Kelperland Trophy Stake 1997
The official report of the 1997's Judge has not yet been published, so here's a report from one of the line walkers:
Held near The Lee, Buckinghamshire Sat 6 & Sun 7th Dec.'97 This year the Stake was judged by Clive Pedlar.
Nine hounds competed, a record perhaps?   There were no lines on Saturday afternoon, since he had a double-booking!   He was playing in a children's pantomine pm & evening (some people have lives outside bloodhounds?).

Some years ago the original Kelperland Trophy was lost, and so a replacement was bought, (thought by some to be a great improvement).   Then the original turned up, and instead of replacing the new one, the Committee decided to leave this one to be awarded to a hound at the discretion of the judge for an "outstanding performance".   For the second year running, the judge awarded this to the winner.   There were no second placings or Certificates of Merit.

The winning hound, Stendela's Millvery Renegade, wasn't particularly fast, but he was enthusiastic, and exceptional in speaking to the line, virtually throughout.

The Stake wouldn't have been possible but for the stalwart management of Jo Franks, who roped in her family to walk the early lines in the dark.
